A Muslim Saint, Mystic and Poet
There is no doubt that Mawlana Jalal al-Din al-Rumi is most highly regarded of all Sufi poets. Annemarie Schimmel described his importance as follows: “If there were ever an inspired writer among Muslim mystics, it was certainly Jalaluddin”. His literary output was great and he was also important for being the supposed founder of the brotherhood of the Whirling Dervishes called Mawlawis due to his title, Mawlana, which means ‘our master’.
His famous work, Mathnawi or the Poem in Rhyming Couplets, have remained unchallenged in Turkish mystical poetry. Mawlana’s famous sentence, “even if the forests were pen and the ocean ink” indicates clearly that Mathnawi is without end, alluding to the Qu’ranic claim that God’s words are without end.
There have been a lot of works both on Mawlana and his book, too, is one of these. It has received wide acception among Turkish readers.
